More consistent colouring helps bring it together I think.

So I'm working on a board game as a narrative vehicle for my paintings and it is time to design the game board. One idea I'm playing with is instead of the usual map view I'm thinking of creating small paintings of stories - things that happened in the place. I have had A LOT of thoughts about games, stories and paintings since 2001 when i first started studying art at uni and this is a real opportunity to bring those to life.
These are just first thoughts:

You are in the game this time, which means standing in the landscape. This is linked to my interest in ARG's. I have started hinting at the glitches. The sky is open to interpretation as are the 'squares'. Squares are the map like fields which again echo board games. The item in the foreground is a tree. A natural object but I have tried to make it look 'placed' like a piece on a board. Perhaps an idea would be to do this with people... to be continued.

Infact you can see the way the board game water colours inspired this more recent painting quite clearly:

As promised I have added some water colours to the site gallery. These are just sketchbook doodles really but reflect my love of games. I have had a lot of thoughts about the interfaces of games and how they help us imagine a narrative. These aren't really an answer to those thoughts but just visual experiments. They will help inform my painting going forward though.
